About the Bank
The Cooperative Bank in Szczytno is a continuation of the activities of the Mazury People's Bank in Szczytno, which was established on September 18, 1910. The bank was then managed by Kazimierz Jaroszyk, a socio-national activist from Warmia and Mazury, editor of "Mazur" published in Szczytno, and secretary of the Mazur People's Party.
With the outbreak of World War I, the Mazur Bank in Szczytno was forced to suspend its activities, among other reasons due to the mobilization of Polish activists to the German army. The resumption of the Bank's operations occurred after the end of World War I.
After the outbreak of World War II, the Bank's assets were confiscated. The resumption of operations took place on January 15, 1946, under the name "People's Bank – Savings and Loan Cooperative in Szczytno." From 1947 to 1950, the bank was managed by the organizer of the people's movement Mirosław Fryderyk Leyk, also a publicist and memoirist. Prominent Mazur activists gathered around the Bank. From this group, Jan Bocian and the then starosta of Szczytno, Walter Późny, emerged.
Since 1957, after restoring the self-government nature of cooperative banking, the number of Bank members increased rapidly. In 1957 there were seven hundred, in 1960 – one thousand four hundred, and by 2005 there were already three and a half thousand members.
At the end of the nineties, the Cooperative Bank in Szczytno merged with six smaller banks and expanded its operations to neighboring communes: Jedwabno, Świętajno, Biskupiec, Dźwierzuty, Wielbark, and Pasym, where branches of the Bank currently operate. In 2007, a new branch of the Cooperative Bank in Szczytno opened in the city center at ul. Polska 49. In March 2008, a branch of the Bank was opened in the Purda commune, and in May 2009, a branch in Olsztyn was opened. Since June 2015, in Szczytno at Plac Juranda 3, a new building operates Branch No. 2.
