About the Bank
The Cooperative Bank in Szczytno is the successor of the Mazur People's Bank in Szczytno, which was established on September 18, 1910. The bank was then headed by Kazimierz Jaroszyk, a social and national activist from Warmia and Masuria, editor of "Mazur" published in Szczytno, and secretary of the Mazur People's Party.
With the outbreak of World War I, the Mazur Bank in Szczytno was forced to suspend its operations, among other things due to the mobilization of Polish activists to the German army. The resumption of the bank's work occurred after the end of World War I.
After the outbreak of World War II, the bank's assets were confiscated. The resumption of operations took place on January 15, 1946, under the name "People's Bank – Savings and Credit Cooperative in Szczytno." From 1947 to 1950, the bank was managed by the organizer of the people's movement, Mirosław Fryderyk Leyk, who was also a journalist and memoirist. Around the bank gathered the leading Mazur activists. Among them, Jan Bocian stood out, as well as the then head of Szczytno, Walter Późny.
Since 1957, after restoring the self-governing nature of banking cooperatives, the number of bank members has rapidly increased. In 1957 there were seven hundred, in 1960 - one thousand four hundred, and in 2005 there were already three and a half thousand members.
In the late nineties, the Cooperative Bank in Szczytno merged with six smaller banks and expanded its activities to neighboring municipalities: Jedwabno, Świętajno, Biskupiec, Dźwierzuty, Wielbark, and Pasym, where branches of the bank currently operate. In 2007, a new branch of the Cooperative Bank in Szczytno began operations in the city center at Polskiej 49. In March 2008, a bank facility was launched in the Purda municipality, and in May 2009, a branch was opened in Olsztyn. Since June 2015, a Branch No. 2 has been operating in Szczytno at Juranda Square 3 in a newly built building.
